Singer Akon appointed special envoy for Ugandan tourism, culture

American rap artist and singer Akon has been given a special tourism and culture ambassadorial role in Uganda.

The singer and entrepreneur will promote tourism, culture and investment opportunities abroad.

His appointment followed a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni where thw duo discussed “different investment opportunities in various sectors, including energy, tourism, and infrastructure development.”

During the meeting coordinated by the Senior Presidential Advisor on Diaspora Affairs, Amb. Abbey Walusimbi, Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) Chief Executive Officer, Lilly Ajarova highlighted a number of available opportunities in the tourism sector that would be of interest to Akon.

Visiting Uganda alongside a group of potential investors in January, his wife Rozina Negusei revealed plans to invest $12 million in the country’s entertainment industry.

The Trade and Investment Officer in the Office of the President, Isaac Kigozi revealed that as a special envoy on tourism and culture, Akon was tasked with the responsibility for the development of the Equator at Kayabwe as well as organizing the Uganda Cultural Festival which will be an annual event to celebrate Africa by the African-American Communities around the world.

“Akon has also been tasked with setting up high class luxurious lodges or accommodations within the tourism development areas of Uganda.

He will also partner with Aya Group of Companies to set up Aya-Akon Tower a 72 storied building within the Central Business District of Kampala, ” Kigozi told media.

A Grammy-nominated singer and record producer, Akon has made headlines in recent years as a pan-African businessman interested in opportunities on the continent of 1.3 billion people. In December a company associated with Akon reached a deal with a state miner to develop a copper and cobalt mine in resource-rich Congo.

Akon, whose real name is Aliaune Thiam, started a group in 2014 that backs solar energy projects in the rural parts of many African countries. The inspiration for Akon Lighting Africa was deeply personal: He found his grandmother was still using candles in Senegal to light her home.

But Akon’s most ambitious goal is to build a $6 billion utopian city in Senegal that he described as a “real-life Wakanda,” comparing it to the technologically advanced fictional African place portrayed in the blockbuster film “Black Panther.”

The singer last year acknowledged the comparisons made between Akon City and the utopian society in “Black Panther,” calling it an “honor.”

Akon City is envisaged to have its own hospital, police station and even its own cryptocurrency already named AKoin. It promises a bit of everything: a seaside resort, a tech hub, recording studios and even a zone dubbed “Senewood” that developers hope will help develop Senegal’s film industry.

Akon City has been allocated a chunk of land outside the Senegalese capital, Dakar, but construction is yet to start.

Akon, who was born in the United States to Senegalese parents, spent much of his childhood in the West African country, where authorities have embraced him as a native son and praised him for investing in Africa at a time of such global financial uncertainty.

Akon, 47, rose to fame with a debut album in 2004. His hit songs include “Smack That,” featuring rapper Eminem

Daddy Andre’s ex-lover pins him for child neglect, demands for DNA test

Singer, songwriter and award winning producer Andre Ojambo mostly known as Daddy Andre, is currently in the hot sup after a woman identified as Atim Dorah accuses him of child neglect.

The latter, in a TV interview revealed that Andre made her pregnant in 2011 and she gave birth to his daughter in 2012. She expressed her disappointment in Andre who she says has never seen his daughter since she was three-months-old.

She shared that she is apparently financially incapacitated and all she demands is for the ‘Kukyookya’ singer to take care of his 8-year-old daughter who is currently living in the worst condition with her grandmother in Gulu.

In a phone call conversation between the two, Andre didn’t deny knowing or meeting Dorah. He, however, seemed least interested in hearing what Dorah had to say and asked that she should not bother him again until the DNA test is confirmed.

“Get me your number, I will call you and you take your child for a DNA test. I don’t want you to bother me again when I haven’t even confirmed if the child is mine. You should first confirm the DNA. I will call you when I am ready and when I have the money for the DNA test,” Andre said in a phone call.

According to Atim, Daddy Andre asked her not to abort the pregnancy and he gave her some money at the time but ever since the child was born, he has never really showed responsibility as the father and always avoids her despite her several effort to reach him.

“I met him at the Railway Quarters in Nsambya. I had a friend there, her boyfriend was a friend to that producer, by then he was a producer. I got pregnant in 2011 and I told him. He told me not to abort. By then he didn’t have money and he would give me about Shs5,000, sometimes Shs1,000, sometimes nothing at all,” she emotionally shared.

When asked to confirm whether the child is really Andre’s, Dorah revealed that she is indeed Andre’s daughter because he even named her Ojambo Nekesa when they visited him at his studio in Nsambya.

“Andre is the father of my child, he even named her the name, Ojambo Nekesa City,” she revealed.

This news comes just days after the producer visited lover Nina Kankunda a.k.a Nina Roz’s parents to make their relationship official and known.

Daddy Andre is not the first local celebrity to be accused of child neglect. Singers Beenie Gunter, Geosteady, Jose Chameleone, Bebe Cool, John Blaq and several other musicians have been down the same road.

Daddy Andre visiting Nina Roz parents ex-girlfriend left in emotions

After several weeks of denying and putting up all sorts of excuses to defend their tight relationship, award winning audio producer and singer Daddy Andre has officially visited the parents of fellow singer Nina Roz at their home in Kireka.

Few weeks back, Nina Roz real names Nina Kankunda came out and refuted allegations that she was romantically involved with music producer-cum-singer Daddy Andre.

“Daddy Andre is my friend and the fact that we are under the same management (Black Market) means we have to be working together hence being close friends,” she said then.

Friday afternoon saw several photos and videos making rounds on social media with Nina Roz and Daddy Andre so into each other as they savored their moment.

Nina and Andre’s Kukyala ceremony was only exclusive to o

Although both artistes who are signed under the same management denied the previous reports that indicated how they are dating, it is now safe to say that the truth has been found.

Much as the two love birds have not yet shared anything on their social media pages by press time, close sources and fellow celebrities have already started congratulating them on the milestone.

Important to note in these is singer and ex-girlfriend to Daddy Andre, songstress Angella Katatumba. Having come across photos and videos showing the two (Nina and Andre) at a Kukyala ceremony, she immediately sent out a congratulatory message while revealing how she was emotionally drained.

Although a section of social media users doubt her ‘cool happy face’, a few days back Katatumba came out and shared how she wasn’t against Andre’s move of legalizing a relationship with Nina Roz because she had also moved on with a new guy after things failed to work out between the two (Angela and Andre).

“I don’t follow emotion, and the white man says ‘one man’s meat is another man’s poison’. Andre wasn’t good enough for me but he is perfect for her, I don’t care what they do with their lives, am happy in another relationship and don’t care what he does with his life too,” Katatumba noted then.

Katatumba’s relationship with Andre hit rock-bottom after she claimed that Daddy Andre refused to take an HIV/AIDS test, and for that reason, she advised Nina Roz not to risk her life by just falling for Andre without first confirming his health status.

Andre has in the past faced a bitter situation in his career as it was marred with several controversial moments including one where an upcoming songstress J-Pafra accused him for sexual assault during studio sessions.

Yvonne Chaka Chaka blocked from holding music rehearsal, faces deportation

Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s much anticipated music performance at Buganda Kingdom end of year show is in the balance after she was blocked by security agencies on Tuesday morning from doing her final music rehearsal.

The legendary South African artiste arrived in the country on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s performance at the Buganda Kingdom’s Enkuuka Y’Omwaka.

But the singer, who was booked into Pearl of Africa Hotel, was on Tuesday morning blocked by armed men as she attempted to conduct a sound check.

Security forces are said to have cordoned off the hotel and ordered her to stop her rehearsal. They also demanded all staff and journalists present to switch off their phones or they be confiscated. The armed men then demanded to speak to her in private. We could not immediately establish where this was to be done.

We could not immediately establish from police or UPDF about the action. Other security sources said the artiste could be deported over sympathizing with People Power movement leader Robert Kyagulanyi, aka, Bobi Wine.

While in Kampala last year, Chaka Chaka referred to Bobi Wine as Uganda’s Nelson Mandela.

The legendary singer revealed that the Kyadondo East MP is a very much admired icon in South Africa and is often linked to South Africa’s apartheid freedom fighter Nelson Mandela.

Kyagulanyi later performed along South African legend Yvonne Chaka Chaka at Serena hotel.

The charity concert organised by Shule Foundation was aimed at raising funds to build a school for former street kids.

Bayern out to test Gladbach title credentials as Leverkusen host Schalke

Borrusia Monchengladbach is currently enjoying their best start to a Bundesliga season in eternity.

Marco Rose’s side sits top of the standings with 28 points, one ahead of second-placed RB Leipzig.

Their 4-2 win at home to Freiburg on Sunday indicated that they do not intend to slow down any time soon.

On Saturday afternoon, they face arguably their biggest test of the season when they host multiple defending champions Bayern Munich at Borussia Park.

The fact that they have been brilliant since the season started is down to the fact that they are performing at both ends of the pitch.

Gladbach’s defense has conceded only 15 goals so far while they have also scored an impressive 28 at the other end.

Marcus Thuram has won most of the plaudits for his exploits upfront and with six goals already registered to his name, the French forward will be yarning for more along with partner Alessan Plea who has managed four.

Bayern is however a different opponent from the rest Gladbach has faced to date.

The Bavarians may not have been performing well in the recent past but without doubt, they are the best side in German.

Fourth place is not a position that is welcome in Munich and head coach Dieter Flick knows that with fact and his side must improve if he is to stay in interim role.

After a good start that saw him win both of his first two Bundesliga games, Flick’s side lost 2-1 at home to Bayer Leverkusen last week, Bayern’s 3rd league loss of the season.

Four points behind Gladbach is catchable as per Bayern’s standards but they will be desperate for that margin not to widen any further.

Both sides have three players ruled out of the contest with Andreas Poulsen, Keanan Bennetts and Torben Musel all injured for Gladbach. For Bayern, they are once again missing the services of Niklas Sule, Lucas Hernandez and Jann Arp.

This fixture did not produce a home victory last season as both sides triumphed in their respective away fixtures with Bayern winning the reverse tie 5-1.

On the same day, Leverkusen will be hoping to build on their victory at Bayern last week when they host Schalke O4 at the Bayer Arena.

Peter Bosz’s side must be riding high on confidence and will be slight favourites to win this one.

The return of Jamaican forward Leon Bailey was inspiring as he scored the two goals against Bayern and he will be the man to watch.

Leverkusen are in good form going into the contest as they have won four of their past five games in all competitions whilst drawing the other.

The only worry is that they have not won any of their past four home-league games (D3 L1).

They start the day in 6th spot, only six points off top spot and with leaders Gladbach hosting wounded Bayern, Leverkusen know that they have a very good chance to close in on the top.

For Schalke 04, just like Leverkusen, they are also in fairly good form as they have not lost any of their last five competitive games (W4 D1).

The appointment of David Wagner is paying dividends and no one could have imagined that they would be in 3rd at this stage.

They have won their past two games 2-1 and they will be fancying their chances to register three victories on the trot for the second time this season after doing likewise in September.

Micthell Weiser and Joel Pohjanpalo are injured for the home side while Jonathan Tah is suspended. Schalke also have issues of their own as they are without up to five first-team players including Salif Sane and Benjamin Stambouli.

Ironically, this fixture has not produced a home victory in any of the last six match-ups with the away side winning four times and the other two ending in draws.

The German Bundesliga match-day 14 will start with Eintracht Frankfurt hosting Hertha Berlin on Friday while on Saturday, there will be two very important games at the top as Borussia Dortmund hosts Fortuna Dusseldorf while RB Leipzig entertains unpredictable Hoffenheim in a fixture that will see Julian Negglesman face his former side.

Mothers to preterm babies now have cause for hope as Kyambogo Run 2019 launched

The annual event is held in the first week of September and has taken place since 2015 .

This year’s Café Javas Kyambogo Run will incorporate an aspect of corporate social responsibility by committing the proceeds to promote maternal health (especially neonatal healthcare) in Kampala through the Kampala City Council Authority’s public health department.

The run is scheduled for 1st September 2019 at Kyambogo, is organised and managed by Beyond Sports Organisation in conjunction with Café Javas and Kyambogo University.

Prince David Wasajja who will be the chief runner set the run in motion on Thursday and called on the public to join the noble cause of supporting the less fortunate and disadvantaged in society.

“I like running and there is no better way to run than for a cause so I’m very happy to be part of this initiative and thank Café Javas and the Mandela Group in general for their continued support of noble causes like this one,” Wasajja said.

“I encourage all running enthusiasts to join this run and those capable of contributing to the cause to do so because it is a good cause,” Wasajja stated.

Café Javas director Yasin Ahmed said their support was in line with the company’s policy of supporting worthy causes.

“We are excited to associate with the Kyambogo Run because the Mandela Group has been at the forefront of supporting sports in Uganda. When this opportunity came to support the run and which translates to supporting the pre-mature babies we quickly jumped on it because it aligns with the group’s goals of supporting sports and the public and we think it is going to be very successful,” Ahmed said.

Nadia Muhammad the marketing director Café Javas said the tickets for the run that cost sh20,000 can be accessed at all City Oil and Café Javas outlets. She said each ticket comes with a race t-shirt and called on all people to join the run that will have races over 5, 10 and 21kms.

“Everyone is welcome to be part of this and it doesn’t matter what level of an athlete they are,” Muhammad said. The run will start at the Kyambogo Cricket Oval.

Yayiro Kasasa the team leader of Beyond Sports Organisation said they decided to bring on board Café Javas for the fourth edition of the run in order to promote the run and to help society, especially with premature children.

The Kyambogo Run is an annual distance running event held in the first week of September and has taken place since 2015.

It was started by nonprofessional runners around Kampala and it covers a total of 46km and is staged as a fun run.

The main idea behind this event is to help people who intend to participate in Marathons in the months of October and November, to gauge their fitness levels ahead of these events and make appropriate adjustments.

80 personnel received their retirement certificates from UPDF 1st Division in Kakiri, 83 from UPDF 2nd Division in Mbarara and 86 others from UPDF 3rd Division in Moroto.

Another 101 personnel were retired in 4th Division in Gulu, 28 in 5 Division based in Pader, 09 in Masindi, and 28 of them attended their retirement ceremony in Nakasongola Cantonment.

The biggest number of the retirees, 341, were seen off in a ceremony held at Land Forces headquarters in Bombo. The Commander Land Forces (CLF), Lt Gen Peter Elwelu presided over the Bombo function.

He commended the retirees, most of who joined the National Resistance Army liberation struggle, for the selfless service they rendered to their motherland Uganda which has seen the country attain sustainable peace from an initial situation of hopelessness.

He told the retirees that the struggle has not yet ended and their input is very vital. He urged the retirees to continue contributing to the development of Uganda in their respective societies.

“Yes, we now have the peace but that is not all we fought for. We still need to see our people prosper. You should continue exercising your patriotic spirit for the good of our people by enlightening them to take advantage of the peaceful environment we have in order to prosper. There is no better time to champion societal development than when one is retired.” Gen Elwelu said.

In his remarks, the Camp Commandant of General Headquarters, Maj Gen Joram Kakari Tumwiine noted that the retirees have added much value to the UPDF institution and the country as a whole.

He told the retirees to carry forth to their respective communities the discipline that has seen them serve and retire honourably.

“Maintain your self-discipline, keep safe, remain healthy and above all, maintain the good relations with the community.” Maj Gen Kakari counselled.

He told his fellow retirees that their prime duty as senior citizens should be to promote security in the country. The Col further told the retirees to avoid wrong politics, unlawful means of solving problems and ensure they do not detach themselves from the UPDF.

The function was attended by among others the Chief of Staff Land Forces Maj Gen Leopold Kyanda, UPDF Chiefs and Directors, religious leaders.
